Peter's Story

Volunteer Story: Peter, Move Wellbeing Walk Leader
At 82, Peter is a shining example of how staying active and connected can enrich life at any age. His journey into walking began back in the late 1970s, when a younger, rugby-playing neighbour suggested climbing Blencathra in the Lake District. To Peter’s surprise, he found the challenge easier than his friend – and that single experience sparked a lifelong love of the great outdoors.
Walking soon became a regular part of his life, often shared with friends. By 1985, Peter had joined a local walking club and was leading routes across the North of England and into the lowlands of Scotland. In the 1980s and 90s, he also supported Durham County Council’s countryside walks, encouraging countless people to enjoy nature and improve their wellbeing through walking.
When the Council-supported walks began at the Gala Theatre in 2016, Peter was one of the first to get involved, and he continues to play a key role as a Move Wellbeing Walk Leader. With his roots firmly in Durham City, and his keen interest in history and architecture, Peter brings more than just fitness to the walks – he adds fascinating insights that make every step more engaging.
Peter says: “Walking has given me so much over the years – friendship, fresh air, and a real connection to the places around us. If I can help others enjoy those same benefits, then I’m more than happy to keep leading walks for as long as I can.”
His dedication, knowledge, and enthusiasm are an inspiration to others, proving that age is no barrier to leading an active, connected, and purposeful life.
Peter is just one of the many passionate volunteers helping to lead approximately 50 wellbeing walks each week across County Durham – if you’d like to experience the benefits for yourself, find out more at Move walking.
