National Fitness Day Powers A Month of Movement Across County Durham
National Fitness Day is a national campaign organised by UKactive to encourage people of all ages and abilities to get active. This year it takes place on Wednesday 24 September with the theme is ‘Powered by you!”. The aim of the day is to empower individuals to make positive lifestyle changes for improved physical, mental and social health.
We are proud to have celebrated this day across our leisure facilities for many years, but in 2025 we are going bigger and better! We don’t what to empower people to be active just on the day, or even over a week as we did last year, but across the whole month of September!
So what does this mean?
During September we want to give everyone in the community a chance to try out the wide range of activities on offer in our leisure centres. There are going to be lots of free opportunities, including:
- 7-day passes for gyms, pools, classes, or if you are new to exercise our Move Hubs with power-assisted equipment
- Virtual classes at four leisure centres
- Family activities such as ten-pin bowling and soft play
- Weekend specials at our climb, TAG active, Abbey Adventure venues and swimming at nine of our pools
These are just a few of the highlights! To find out more about what’s happening and when check out our dedicated NFD page and chose an activity that empowers you to move more this September!
Why are we going so big in 2025?
Having a whole month of activities gives people the flexibility to make the time to get involved, and potentially to try out multiple activities
National Fitness Day is giving us the opportunity to showcase the evolution of our leisure centres into community hubs that welcome all ages and abilities, encouraging activity and social interactions, driving not only physical health but also mental wellbeing and social connection.
The aim is simple: to see every free session full and help every individual take their first step towards finding an activity that works for them. We especially want to engage those who haven’t yet experienced what our services have to offer and show that movement can fit into and enhance the life of everyone regardless of where they are on their life’s journey.
By making September a month of movement, we hope to inspire long-term behaviour change that will benefit the health, wellbeing and future of everyone living and working in County Durham.
